Strain energy density prediction of fatigue crack growth from hole of aging aircraft structures
نویسنده
چکیده
Fatigue crack growth rate depends not only on the load amplitude, but also on the morphology of crack path. The strain energy density theory has the ability to analyze crack growth rate. A strain energy density crack growth model is proposed. It can predict the lifetime of fatigue crack growth for mixed mode cracks while an equation for mode I crack is also obtained. The validity of the model is established with two cases: a center-crack panel and cracks emanating from the edge of a hole. The stress intensity factor expression for the former case is analytical while that of the latter is calculated numerically using finite elements. The results are compared with the testing data. Good agreement shows that the proposed model is useful. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Experimental Investigation and Numerical Prediction of Fatigue Life in Force Fitted Fastener Holes
In this paper, the effect of interference fit on fatigue life of holed plate of mechanical joints was investigated experimentally. Fatigue tests were carried out on the holed specimens of Al-alloy 7075-T6 alloy. The interference fit process consists of force fitting a fastener into the hole with a negative clearance (diameter of the fastener is larger than of the hole) that produces beneficial ...

The growth of slant cracks by fretting fatigue of a half plane in contact with a flat rounded pad was studied. The mode I and mode II stress intensity factors for cracks of various lengths and directions were calculated using the semi-analytical method of the distribution of dislocations, and their cumulative effect on the crack growth was investigated using the strain energy density criterion....

متن کاملSimultaneous Ultrasonic Monitoring of Crack Growth and Dynamic Loads during a Full Scale Fatigue Test of an Aircraft Wing
An in situ ultrasonic angle beam method has been developed to detect and size fatigue cracks emanating from fastener holes. The method employs transducers mounted in a pitch-catch configuration on each side of the hole, and the modulation of received signals with load is used to detect and size small fatigue cracks. The focus of this paper is the monitoring of a series of critical fastener hole...

This paper presents a simple method based on strain energy density criterion to study the crack initiation angle by finite element method under biaxial loading condition. The crack surface relative displacement method is used to eliminate the calculation of the stress intensity factors which are normally required. The analysis is performed using higher order four node quadrilateral element. The...
